About Sport and Recreation Development
The SBLGA's Sport and Recreation Development Office was established in 1999 under the provisions of the Local Government Recreation Officer Pilot Program (LGROPP) 1998/99 operated by Sport and Recreation Queensland. It exists to implement sport and recreation programs in the Shires of Nanango, Kingaroy, Wondai and Murgon.

The office is staffed by Sport and Recreation Development Officer Jodie Grant (see photo below right). Her work is focussed on projects and services associated with infrastructure and sport and recreation programs.

The goals of the SBLGA's Sport and Recreation Development program are:

  • Sport and recreation facility planning and development
  • Recreation planning
  • Open space planning
  • Facilities and database management
  • Social planning
  • Organisational development
  • Sport development
  • Recreation development
  • Coaching development
  • Recreational tourism

Note: In late 2002 Murgon Shire Council elected to withdraw from the SBLGA's Sports and Recreation Development Program. As a result, Mr North is now jointly employed by Nanango, Kingaroy and Wondai Shire Councils and his work focusses solely on Sports and Recreation Development in those three Shires. In consequence, Mr North's regular Activity Reports are no longer published on our web site (though all his prior SBLGA Activity Reports from April 2001 through to August 2002 remain available for perusal).

Current Sport and Recreation Assets

As at January 2000 there were approximately 214 clubs and associations involved with providing sport and recreation opportunities for residents and visitors in the South Burnett.

These groups cover a broad range of activities from organised sport (including netball, tennis, cricket, soccer, touch football, rugby league and rugby union) through to casual recreation and representative bodies. All of them would like to improve the facilities already on offer.

The region already has some quality sports and recreation facilities for community needs of the community. These include playing fields, sports centres and many beautiful parks and gardens scattered throughout the townships.

The South Burnett also has many magnificent natural sporting and recreation assets including the Bunya Mountains; Coomba Falls; the Gordonbrook, Bjelke-Peterson and Boondooma Dams, as well as an array of state forests.
